“No Vacancy” is a solo photo exhibition by artist Nicola Stead. This body of work is intended to narrate inhabitants of a hotel. Intentionally ambiguous, the work emphasizes a sense of isolation and alienation. The images have a cinematic quality composed of sequenced images, showing a series of events and glimpses of environments. Each scene contains characters made suspicious and uncomfortable by foreign territories and a projection of uncertainty describing a drama within a silent film; benevolent characters within a physical and emotional space suggesting a silent drama.

About Ugly Duckling Exhibitions

Ugly Duckling Exhibitions is a professional development project, created by Stephanie Spindler; initiated in order to learn and do as an artist and art director.
The collaborative relationship between myself, public venues and artists consists of creating an infrastructure to support visual art exhibitions within a more casual setting, giving an opportunity for artists to have a major contribution in how their work is displayed; creating a venue for artists and the public to support each other and to continue developing a dialogue between artists and audiences. It is part of my practice to seek out ways to engage in critical discourse and create environments that raise the awareness and diversity of creative practices in Glasgow.
This project has been born out of my interest in showing work, meeting people, expanding my own ideas about art work in social settings and learning what it takes to create an environment conducive to supporting artists within the community as well as supporting audience development.
Montgomery’s Café is a locally owned and run coffee house just around the corner from the Kelvingrove Art Galleries. After doing market research with the clientele, I have found that people who frequent the Café’ are interested in what is being shown and approve of the variety of the different exhibitions. There has been a diverse range of responses about the art work and positive feed back about the rotating exhibitions.
I want to continue to evolve this project by incorporating events and opportunities for a broader range of artists to exhibit and participate within this great venue. Our goals include diversifying our exhibition capacity including alternative medium, such as film and performance art and working with artists and community projects to provide a platform to show what they do and how they can be supported by the public.

Montgomery’s is a public space that is inviting arts happenings to take place as a part of it’s own demographic and community environment. The structure and goals of Ugly Duckling Exhibitions allows for interesting projects for those willing to engage with an open mind about art work in social contexts. It offers a platform for artists to consider and expand their practice and ideas about art in a public setting and to engage and promotetheir ideas in a structured and enthusiastic way to a wider public audience
